PLGC Wins 6 First Place Awards
Plantation Lakes Garden Club is the "Darling of Delaware" - or at least the Delaware Federation of Garden Clubs (DFGC). That's because our club won six first place state awards at our first ever DFGC Awards Luncheon. That's right, six!
AND the yearbook won first place in our category from National Garden Clubs, Inc. Not bad for a brand new club with fewer than 20 members!
OUR SALUTE TO VETERANS - All PLGC members and guests in attendance at our November meeting created two or three patriotic-themed floral designs for Veterans at Atlantic Shores Rehab and Health Center in Millsboro and the Veterans Hospital in Milford. Congratulations to everyone who participated in this project and especially Project Chair Gale Harley and her committee. They did all the advance prep work that made it possible to complete so many arrangements in an hour.
PLGC EXPO & PLANT SALE - PLGC projects were on display at the Plantation Lakes Community Center during our first fundraiser - a sale of potted mums and pansies to help beautify our community. In spite of the rainy day, Ways & Means Committee Chair Tina Latshaw's committee raised over $500 to fund our 2016-2017 projects. Plant It Pink Committee Chair Debbie Darr sold dozens of spring-blooming pink bulbs to raise funds for a donation to the NGC Project that promotes breast cancer awareness. Not only that, but our neighbors learned about several of our club's projects through signage that was on display.
"GROWING TOGETHER" NEWSLETTER - This publication is prepared by PLGC President Margaret Woda following the monthly board meeting, based on input from club officers and committee chairs, and distributed at the General Meeting. Growing Together usually includes information about the month's Program and Presenter, members' birthdays, thank you's to hostesses and design exhibitors, news about upcoming events and other items of interest to members.
MEMBERSHIP BROCHURE - Prospective PLGC members receive several handouts from Membership Chair Jan Pallas-Dudley when they attend their first and second meetings as a guest. This brochure focuses on National Garden Clubs, Inc. to introduce prospective members to the National organization so they can see how PLGC members fit in to the broader organization. One of our club objectives is to support National Garden Club's objectives, and this brochure helps to expand on that concept. By the way, PLGC also won an Honorable Mention for member participation in meetings and activities!
PLGC WEBSITE - The PLGC website is an essential element of internal and external communication for our club. Easy navigation puts information at our fingertips, whether you're a new member looking for information about joining our club, a member of another garden club looking for ideas, or a member of the press looking for background information about our club in preparation for writing about one of our activities. A member directory is password-protected for access by members only, and a blog provides periodic updates about some of our club activities.
PLGC YEARBOOK - A garden club yearbook is really more of a directory for the current garden club year than a review of the past year (think high school yearbook - NOT). The garden club yearbook is a reflection on the health of the club, with judging criteria based primarily on the quality and format of programs throughout the year. The next most important criteria is the descriptions of club projects and the beneficiaries of these projects. Program and Projects Chair Marie Van Der Wall and the many individual program and project chairs deserve most of the credit for our winning yearbook, which was assembled by Yearbook and Website Chair Margaret Woda.
Congratulations to us - all of us - because every member in our club played a role (or two or three or more roles) in making our club the "Darling of Delaware."
