Let's beautify Plantation Lakes, one front door at a time on May 1, 2017. It all begins for our community with a May Basket Demonstration on April 21, 10-12, at Plantation Lakes Community Center.
HISTORY OF MAY DAY
May Day celebrations go back centuries to pagan times and they have evolved over the years in different culture. In some times and places, May Day has celebrated political causes but, historically, it is a day for celebrating the beginning of Spring with flowers, candy, dancing, and celebration. We will celebrate springtime on May Day in Plantation Lakes on May 1, 2017, with flowers displayed on or near the front door of our homes.
MAY BASKET DEMONSTRATION
A garden club member will assemble a May Basket for our neighbors at a Demonstration on May 21, 10 a.m. to 12 noon, at the Plantation Lakes Community Center. Admission is free and you don't need to bring anything with you.
Attendees will go home with the knowledge that making a May Basket is easy and fun to do, a list of materials you will need to make one at home, and five simple steps for making your own May Basket. Light refreshments will be served and another member will offer an optional bow-making demonstration for anyone interested in putting a big fancy bow on their May Basket (although a simple bow will be just fine.)
No, we're not going to tell you the five steps here because we want you to come to our event. We will consider offering an evening demonstration if at least five people express interest by contacting us through our website.
MAY BASKET DISPLAY
Participants are asked to display their May Basket before 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 30, so there will be plenty of opportunity for neighbors to drive around the community and see them. Photos will be taken between 1:00 p.m. on Sunday and 7:30 p.m. on Monday, depending on weather conditions and availability of the photographer. A media release must be signed by participants authorizing us to take a photo and post it on our website with the property address.
This is not a contest and there will be no prizes or shout-out other than compliments from your neighbors and a thank you for helping to beautify Plantation Lakes one front door at a time.
